ABOUT US

OUR ORIGIN STORY

SHADOW+LIGHT Logo

SHADOW+LIGHT grew out of Emmy-winning filmmaker Phil Lott’s decades working across both scripted and documentary storytelling.

Over his time working at the forefront of premium non-fiction, a pattern became clear: documentary projects were rich with story, character, and detail – but by the time scripted producers engaged, much of that material had already been left behind, the case-files sent back, and family archive returned. Conversely, scripted projects often focused on a single chapter of a life or event, leaving vast, untapped story unexplored - and audiences desperate to learn 'the real story'.

SHADOW + LIGHT EXISTS TO BRIDGE THAT GAP

Today’s audiences don’t just watch – they invest. They want the emotional power of a scripted experience, and the depth and authenticity that only documentary can deliver.

In today's streaming landscape, scripted producers know that when they option great true-life material, they’re inevitably leaving huge parts of the story behind.

SHADOW+LIGHT develops documentary and scripted projects in parallel, allowing each form to inform the other from the outset. Scripted teams benefit from rigorous research and access to the real people at the center of the story as the documentary is produced. Meanwhile, for non-scripted producers, early scripted partnership can add momentum and scale to stories they've spend years putting together - and know that wider audiences need to see.

The result is storytelling that is deeper and more complete – built for audiences who want to stay immersed, and for platforms that recognize viewers don’t stop at one version of a great story.
